Mike Gebel was a graduate student researcher in the laboratories of Professor Finlayson-Pitts from 1996-2000. During his time in our labs, Mike conducted significant research, contributed to numerous scientific publications, and designed and constructed specialized research equipment that is still in use today. Upon leaving our labs, Mike was hired at the California Air Resources Board and continued making important contributions to the study of air pollution as manager of the Organic Analysis Section. During his time with us and in his career at CARB, his wife, Jennifer, was a source of solid support for him. Sadly, Mike passed away suddenly in February, 2006. As a way of acknowledging Mike and his contributions to AirUCI and our research, we wanted to honor him in a lasting way and to acknowledge Jennifer's commitment to his career.
On April 27, 2006, AirUCI formally dedicated our library/meeting room as the Michael E. Gebel and Jennifer Bentson-Gebel Library. Jennifer, Mike's parents and sisters, many of his extended family members, and dozens of his friends were in attendance, along with dignitaries from UCI. We use this space daily as a resource for the AirUCI team, a room where our publications and textbooks are available for study and where individuals can gather both formally and informally to discuss research issues. More about Mike The UCI Department of Chemistry has established the annual Michael E. Gebel Award, presented each year to an outstanding graduate student early in his or her career in the field of chemistry.
