Graduate Study in Chemical Biology at UCI Chemical biology uses techniques from all disciplines of chemistry to advance a molecular understanding of biology. At UCI, you can earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry, while studying in a multi-disciplinary environment. Students with degrees in the chemical, biological, and physical sciences are encouraged to apply for admission at http://www.chem.uci.edu/grad/apply_on_line.shtml. On the application, specify School/Department: School of Physical Sciences; Major/Degree: Chemistry-Ph.D.; and Specific Area of Interest: Chemical Biology. Successful applicants are invited to enter the Department during the summer prior to their first year of graduate studies, and begin coursework and laboratory rotations. This fully supported summer program (starting in July) provides a unifying curriculum for the diverse backgrounds of entering students. Tracks in Chemical BiologyStudents choose one of four tracks representing the diverse areas in chemical biology.
The Curriculum A complete list of required and elective courses associated with each track can be found here. The Department of Chemistry The UCI Department of Chemistry consistently ranks amongst the top programs in the country. With 45 faculty members, 225 graduate students, and 50 postdoctoral research associates, the Department prides itself on a its ability to provide vigorous research programs with international reputations in a friendly, informal atmosphere. The Department has the instrumentation needed to support these high quality research programs, including an NMR facility housing six high- field instruments, an X-ray facility equipped with three diffractometers, and six mass spectrometers that can analyze molecules as light as gases or as massive as proteins and polymers. |
