Graduate Studies

The Chemistry department at UCI offers Ph. D. programs in the traditional areas of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, as well as special interdisciplinary programs in chemical biology and chemical and materials physics (ChaMP) and medicinal chemistry and pharmacology (MedChemPharm, MCP).

Research is central to the Ph.D. program, and students choose a mentor and begin their doctoral research during the first year. During the first year, students also take classes in their area of interest. The department's extensive seminar program, in which UCI scientists and distinguished visitors from other universities present their latest research results, allows students to continue their education throughout their graduate career. Students also gain teaching experience as laboratory instructors and discussion leaders as part of their training. Financial support is provided to all graduate students in the form of teaching assistantships or research fellowships.
