Senate recognizes faculty

Amanda Holton and Dick Chamberlin receive Academic Senate awards.

Amanda Holton has been named the 2018-2019 recipient of the Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for Teaching. The award is conferred by the Senate on a faculty member who has made significant contributions to the university through sustained, distinguished teaching.

Undergrad is ACS scholar

Undergrad Nehal Idris selected for the ACS Scholars Program.

Nehal Idris has been selected to be a scholar in the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Scholars Program. 

The ACS Scholars Program awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students majoring in undergraduate chemistry-related disciplines, and are also intending to pursue careers in chemistry-related fields. Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000* per academic year. To date, over 3,000 students have received a funding from the ACS Scholars Program.

Grad papers are finalists

Papers by grads Lauren Fleming and Julia Montoya-Aguilera are finalists for Wagner award.

Lauren Fleming and Julia  Montoya-Aguilera were selected as two of the three finalists in the 2018 Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences, an annual award based on a paper competition. The papers that brought them recognition were:

Gregory Weiss and Alon Gorodetsky honored by Applied Innovation

Gregory Weiss was named UCI's 2018 Entrepreneurial Leader of the Year and Alon Gorodetsky was named UCI's 2018 Emerging Innovation/Early Career Innovator of the Year. These awards were based upon technologies licensed, patented, formed into companies, and other technology transfer activities.

UCI Applied Innovation brings campus-based inventions and entrepreneurship together with Orange County's vibrant business community to support job creation and economic growth.

Suzanne Blum's contributions to undergraduate education recognized by dean

Suzanne Blum was selected as the recipient of the Physical Science Outstanding Contributions to the Undergraduate Education award for the Department of Chemistry.  For previous winners, click here.

Alum does good

Dave MacMillan (UCI chem PhD '96) elected to National Academy of Sciences.

Dave received his PhD in 1996 with the Overman group, on the development of a new stereocontrolled synthesis of tetrahydrofurans. His graduate studies culminated in the total synthesis of 7-(−)-deacetoxyalcyonin acetate, a eunicellin deterpenoid isolated from soft coral Eunicella stricta.

Vy Dong and Bill Evans receive Lauds and Laurels.

Vy Dong and Bill Evans received the Lauds and Laurels Award in recognition of their contributions and their merit. Vy has has been honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Bill has been honored with the Outstanding Faculty Achievement Award.
