Because laser and optical techniques have become a common tool in a wide
variety of disciplines of chemical research, the Department of Chemistry
created a laser spectroscopy facility in 1993. A departmental spectroscopist
was hired to manage equipment, provide know-how of optical techniques
and assist in the interpretation of spectroscopic data.
The facility now incorporates a wide variety of nanosecond laser systems
(Nd:Yag, Excimer, dye, OPO), a number of CW systems (Ar-ion, Nd:Yag, single
mode ring dye) and a Pico Second system consisting of Nd:Yag laser and
two OPO's. Also other related instruments such as a photo-spectrometer,
a fluorescence spectrometer, a FTIR are placed within the facility as
well as photo detectors and instruments for the characterization of laser
beams.
