Since 2000 the Allergan Foundation has provided funding for undergraduates to carry out research working in the areas of organic chemistry and chemical biology. This funding has included a summer stipend and additional support for supplies. When possible, matching funds from UC Irvine’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) have enabled the Department to increase our number of summer undergraduate research fellows. The Allergan Foundation’s support for our undergraduate summer research program has made it possible for the Department to offer our most talented undergraduates the chance to experience the thrill of tackling their own scientific research project with mentoring and support from faculty experts and postdoctoral fellows. Despite the fact that many students who participate in the program are having their first research experiences, a significant number have co-authored publications with their faculty or postdoctoral mentors in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. These research experiences help to shape the future for our students, strengthening their interest in research careers, and making them more competitive applicants for graduate and professional programs.
