POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW, ALZHEIMER’S DRUG DISCOVERY

California State University Fresno

POSITION DESCRIPTION
An NIH-funded Postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Santanu Maitra in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, California State University Fresno (Fresno State). Fresno State is designated by the Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI).

This NIH SuRE (Support for Research Excellence) program position will be supported by a built-in supplemental mechanism.

The position encourages applications from underrepresented minority (URM) candidates.

The candidate is expected to lead the design, synthesis, purification, and characterization of small, focused libraries of organic compounds for biological screening. The project entails small organic molecule intervention to modulate three proteins, ApoE, AbcA1, and Ldlr to potentially reduce/clear Ab plaques for Alzheimer’s therapy. The research team has identified eight lead molecules, one of which exhibited in vivo modulation of the proteins. This SuRE project focuses on the identification of new leads while establishing screening protocols in the PI’s laboratory at Fresno State. A consultant/collaborator at University of California Irvine will provide initial training, expertise, advice, and guidance on the molecular biology aspects of the project.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have the possibility to couple the research activity with an undergraduate teaching assignment (no more than 2 weighted teaching units) in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Course based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) may be a teaching opportunity.

Publications, patents, and conference/meeting presentations will be encouraged and supported by the fellowship.

Expected salary will follow the NIH guidelines starting around $54,840 per year (https://www.niaid.nih.gov/grants-contracts/salary-cap-stipends).

QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in synthetic organic/bioorganic/medicinal/biological chemistry or a closely related field is required. Knowledge of basic molecular biology and relevant laboratory techniques will be valuable.
