Nuclear Reactor Operator Course 2021 – September 22nd to November 19th

Learn the basic knowledge and skills to operate the University of California – Irvine’s TRIGA nuclear reactor! This is a nine week course that teaches about reactor theory, operation, maintenance, safety, and emergency procedures. After eight weeks of instructions, students will undergo a written and a practical exam during week nine of the course. Those who successfully pass both exams will be nominated to the NRC’s official licensing exam to become operators of UCI’s TRIGA nuclear reactor. The NRC’s exam will take place in Winter 2022 subject to examiners’ availability.

Those interested in the course can apply by emailing the course application and a resume to the training coordinator at jkeffer@uci.edu by September 10th 2021. Incomplete applications will not be considered. A total of six students will be selected for the course by the reactor personnel. Priority will be given to experimenters planning to incorporate the reactor in their studies and candidates seeking a career path in the field of nuclear science and technology.

The tentative schedule of the course is:

Lecture: Fridays 10 – 12 on Zoom

Operations: Group 1, Wednesday 1:00 – 5:00

Group 2, Thursday 1:00 – 5:00

Additional required practice of at least 1 hour per week per student at both the student’s and the facility’s availability.
