assigned and are posted on the class Web site at https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/assignments.html.
Homework
Assignments
Actively working through homework
problems is essential for success in this class. Homework assignments are to be
done prior to the class for which they are assigned and are posted on the class
Web site at https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/assignments.html.
Although problems assigned from the textbook will not be collected, quizzes
will include problems taken directly from the textbook homework assignments.
Electronic homework, through
Sapling Learning (http://www.saplinglearning.com/),
will count for 10% of your grade. Assignments will be due at 9 am on the day
scheduled at https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/assignments.html. and will be available roughly one week before they are due.
While it is OK to discuss
problems with your classmates while working them, it is not OK to simply copy
the answers to the homework problems. The electronic homework is intended to
provide hints and coaching to guide your thinking and teach you. You are
expected to maintain this same spirit of guidance and learning, whether you
work on the homework alone or in study groups.
Attendance
Attendance of the lecture and discussion sections is mandatory.
Quizzes
In-class quizzes will count for 20% of the grade in class and will consist of
problems taken directly from the textbook homework assignments and discussion
section problems. All quizzes are closed book. Molecular models are
permitted. There are no makeup quizzes and missed quizzes will count as a zero, regardless
of circumstance. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Quizzes will be
given on the following days.
Quiz 1 (Chapter 19): Thursday
April 12.
Quiz 2 (Chapter 20): Thursday April 19.
Quiz 3 (Chapter 21): Tuesday May 1.
Quiz 4 (Chapter 23): Tuesday May 22.
Quiz 5 (Chapter 24): Tuesday May 29.
Quiz 6 (Chapter 25): Tuesday, June 5.
Although seating for quizzes
will not be assigned, students must record their chosen seat on their quiz in
order to receive credit.
Graded quizzes will be returned
electronically through the drop box feature of UCI's My Electronic Educational
Environment (EEE, https://eee.uci.edu/myeee).
Answer keys will be posted to https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/exams.html.
Exams
Midterm (25%): Tuesday May 8,
Chapters 19-22
Final (45%): Tuesday June 12, 10:30-12:30, Chapters 19-25, 27, and selected
topics from Chapters 28 and 26 (comprehensive).
All exams are closed book. Molecular models are permitted. There are no makeup exams.
Unexcused absences will count as a zero. Written documentation for an excused
absence must be provided.
Seating for exams will be
assigned, and you must know your seat assignment prior to the exam. Please
check your seat assignment prior to the midterm and final exams at https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/examseating.html.
Students must record their assigned seat on their exam in order to receive
credit.
Picture ID (UCI Student ID or
Drivers License) are required to take exams. IDs will be collected, checked,
and returned during the exam. Exams will not be accepted from students without
proper identification.
Graded exams will be returned
electronically through the drop box feature of UCI's My Electronic Educational
Environment (EEE, https://eee.uci.edu/myeee).
Answer keys will be posted to https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/exams.html.
Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is strictly enforced on quizzes, exams, and other aspects of
this course. Academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade in the class
and a letter in the student's file. For a detailed description of activities
constituting academic dishonesty, please see https://eee.uci.edu/12s/40720/academichonesty.html.
An academic honesty statement
will be included on each quiz and exam. Students must sign this statement in
order to receive credit.
Cell Phones
Receipt of calls during class is
remarkably disruptive to the instructor and is inconsiderate to all those
present. Cell phones must be turned off (neither on tone or on vibrate) during
class. If your cell phone goes off during class, please expect to be asked to
leave and not to return for the day.
