Office Hours (J. Nowick): W 10:30-11:30 am, 4126 Natural Sciences 1

Note: The best way to get in touch with me is either to catch me immediately after class or to stop by during my office hour. You may also try stopping by outside of my office hour. E-mail is generally not as good a way of reaching me, and messages sent by e-mail may not receive prompt replies.

If you have questions about materials from class or are having problems with the homework, quizzes, or exams, you will be expected to bring both your notes from class and your written homework assignments, so that we can go over them together and determine how to best improve your studying.

Lecture Hours
Lecture: MWF 9:00-9:50, HSLH 100A

Discussion Sections and Hours
Attendance of a weekly discussion section is mandatory, although it is not critical that you attend the discussion section for which you are enrolled. Some of the problems worked in the discussion sections will reappear on the midterm or final exams. Answer keys will not be provided to these problems, so it is critical to pay close attention during the discussion sections. Discussion sections are cancelled the week of Monday March 31 and will begin on Monday April 7. Discussion section will not meet on Friday April 25, Friday May 23, or Monday May 26. Please plan to attend a different discussion section on each of those weeks.

Attendance
Attendance of the lecture and discussion sections is necessary to succeed in the class.
Please sit in the front half of the lecture hall. We are a small section in a big lecture hall; let's reserve the seats in the back half of the lecture hall for students who do not plan to pass this class. If you miss a class or wish to review the material, you may do so with the lecture videos from 2012 Chem 51C, which are available at https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/videos.html and at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL47B3E3FDB175BB8B&feature=view_all.

Reading Assignments
Reading assignments are to be done prior to the class for which they are assigned and are posted on the class Web site at https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/assignments.html.

Homework Assignments
Actively working through homework problems is essential for success in this class. Homework assignments are to be done prior to the class for which they are assigned and are posted on the class Web site at https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/assignments.html. Although problems assigned from the textbook will not be collected, some of the assigned problems from the textbook will reappear on the midterm or final exams.

Electronic homework, through Sapling Learning (http://www.saplinglearning.com/), will count for 10% of your grade. Assignments will be due at 11:55 pm on the day scheduled at https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/assignments.html and will be available roughly one week before they are due. While it is OK to discuss problems with your classmates while working them, it is not OK to simply copy the answers to the homework problems. The electronic homework is intended to provide hints and coaching to guide your thinking and teach you. You are expected to maintain this same spirit of guidance and learning, whether you work on the homework alone or in study groups.

Exams
Midterm 1 (22.5%): Friday April 25, Chapters 19-21.
Midterm 2 (22.5%): Friday May 23, Chapters 22-24.
Final (45%):
Wednesday, June 11, 8-10 am, Chapters 19-25, 28, and selected topics from Chapter 29 (comprehensive).

All exams are closed book. Molecular models are permitted. There are no makeup exams. Unexcused absences will count as a zero. Written documentation for an excused absence must be provided. Seating for exams will be assigned, and you must know your seat assignment prior to the exam. Please check your seat assignment prior to the midterm and final exams at https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/examseating.html. Students must record their assigned seat on their exam in order to receive credit. Picture ID (UCI Student ID or Drivers License) are required to take exams. IDs will be collected, checked, and returned during the exam. Exams will not be accepted from students without proper identification. Graded exams will be returned electronically through the drop box feature of UCI's My Electronic Educational Environment (EEE, https://eee.uci.edu/myeee). Answer keys will be posted to https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/exams.html.

Grades
Grades will be based on the homework (10%), midterm exams (45%) and final exam (45%).

Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is strictly enforced on quizzes, exams, and other aspects of this course. Academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade in the class and a letter in the student's file. For a detailed description of activities constituting academic dishonesty, please see https://eee.uci.edu/14s/40660/academichonesty.html. An academic honesty statement will be included on each exam. Students must sign this statement in order to receive credit.

Cell Phones
Receipt of calls during class is remarkably disruptive to the instructor and is inconsiderate to all those present. Cell phones must be turned off (neither on tone or on vibrate) during class. If your cell phone goes off during class, please expect to be asked to leave and not to return for the day.

Enrollment (Adding or Dropping the Class)
Use WebReg (http://www.reg.uci.edu/registrar/soc/webreg.html) to add, drop, or change the grade option in your classes. The deadline is the end of Week 2 by 5:00 pm (April 11, 2013).
