Overview

Biomacromolecules, such as DNA, RNA, protein, and polysaccharide, are quintessential for life. Synthetic macromolecules, on the other hand, play an essential role in our life by improving our health, enhancing our living condition, and advancing new technology. The Guan group research is focused on the broadly defined organic, biological, and macromolecular materials chemistry. We combine organic and biological syntheses, often facilitated by catalysis and biomimetic design, to construct functional macromolecules of controlled molecular structures and supramolecular architectures. We are interested in a spectrum of topics in materials chemistry ranging from the synthesis, high order structural control, and biological functions of macromolecular materials. Three common themes - catalysis, non-covalent interactions, and biomimicry - pervade in our research program. Our current projects relate to one or more of the following three interconnected research foci: discovery of new catalytic methods for efficient synthesis of macromolecules, biomimetic design of macromolecular architectures, and development of functional biomaterials for biomedical applications.
