Learn How to Become a Nuclear Reactor Operator

Learn the basic knowledge and skills to operate the University of California – Irvine’s TRIGA nuclear reactor! This is an intensive two week course that teaches about reactor theory, operation, maintenance, safety, radiation, instrumentation, design, and emergency procedures. In addition to lectures, various laboratory experiments are performed at the reactor facility where students operate the reactor while learning firsthand about radiation, void coefficient, neutron detection, nuclear instrumentation modules, fissile material, moderators, neutron poisons, temperature coefficient, and delayed neutrons. In addition to normal operation, students will each perform a pulse, which is a unique characteristic of TRIGA reactors.

  • Operator a nuclear reactor!
  • Pulse a reactor!
  • Learn components of the reactor facility!
  • Meet some awesome people!
