Abstract
Professor Mukamel's interests focus on the modeling of ultrafast dynamics and relaxation processes of large molecules, biological complexes and semiconductors and how they can be probed by novel optical spectroscopic techniques. His group works on developing coherent optical and infrared pulse sequences which accomplish goals analogous to multidimensional NMR and have the capacity to probe protein structures and dynamics with high temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution. A time dependent many-body density matrix framework has been developed for computing electronic excitations and nonlinear optical response of conjugated polymers, molecular nanostructures, chromophore aggregates and semiconductor nanoparticles. Biophysical applications include the folding and dynamical fluctuations in proteins, long range electron transfer, energy funneling, and collective nonlinear optical response of light harvesting complexes and dendrimers. Other studies include single molecule spectroscopy, femtosecond x-ray spectroscopy, collective nonlinear response and superradiance in molecular nanostructures, and semiclassical simulations of optical response.
