Graduate Student Researchers
UCI graduate student employees appointed as graduate student researchers are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Regents of the University of California and the Student Workers Union, International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) AFL-CIO. The agreement between the Regents and the UAW (AFL-CIO) can be found here.
The department/program/school of the Principal Investigator (PI) who is assigning the graduate student employee work is the “hiring unit,” regardless of whether they are the “home” to the funding.

GSR Time Reporting
When you hold a GSR, GSR Fellow, or GSR Trainee appointment, you are required to submit a timesheet on a monthly basis in the UCI Time Reporting System (TRS). You do not report hours worked. Instead, you only report usage of exception hours such as PTO or leave.
- Monthly absence/leave reporting must be completed by the 6th of the month following the pay period being reported.
-
When reporting absences/leaves, you should report the appropriate number of hours for that day. For example, if you were scheduled to work 4 hours on a day you took Personal Time Off (PTO), you should input 4 hours of PTO in to the Time Reporting System (TRS).
-
- If you do not have any Personal Time Off (PTO) and/or Leaves to report, you can log in to the Time Reporting System (TRS) and select no to the following question:
