This talk will discuss the chemical reactivity and catalytic activity of nanoscale gold particles and
well-defined clusters, and their correlation to the chemical environment. Specific examples include oxidation reactions in gas phase, at oxide supports, on thin oxide films, and at surfaces of partially protected
nanoclusters [1-11]. An effort is made to relate the reactivity to the specific electronic structure of the active particles. A novel phase of one-dimensional gold oxide may also play a role for the local redox chemistry at edges of gold clusters supported by electron-donating supports.
