As helicene and helicene-like molecules are attractive candidates for optical or electronic functional materials, the development of their efficient synthesis is important subject for structural alterations and supply of sufficient quantities. The classical method for the synthesis of helicenes is the oxidative photocyclization of stilbene-type precursors, however, that cannot be conducted in a large scale due to employing highly diluted reaction conditions. Therefore non-photochemical methods for the synthesis of helicene and helicene-like molecules have long been investigated to date. In particular, catalytic enantioselective methods are highly desired. In this lecture, I will disclose our recent results of the catalytic enantioselective helicene synthesis via the transition-metal-catalyzed aromatic ring construction.
