Thesis Master's Requirements

One quarter prior to completing your thesis master's
  • Complete 7 approved four-unit courses, including six graduate-level courses, with a grade of B or better. CHEM 280, 290, 291, and 399 may not be used towards the thesis master's
  • Form your master's thesis committee: Your master’s thesis committee can be the same as your doctoral committee, please confirm with your doctoral committee members that they are able to serve on your master’s thesis committee.
  • Advance to candidacy for your master’s degree: Complete the Chemistry Master's Advancement to Candidacy Form. Once submitted, Bailey will prepare the Graduate Division DocuSign form for you to complete and sign. Students must advance to candidacy for the master's degree at least one quarter prior to earning their degree
  • Review filing deadlines
During the quarter you will complete your thesis master's

Coursework Master's Requirements

  • 10 approved four-unit courses, including eight graduate-level courses, with a grade of B or better
  • CHEM 290, 291, and 399 may not be used towards the coursework master's
  • One quarter of CHEM 280 (minimum 4 units) may be used towards the coursework master's only
  • Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive oral examination
  • Advance to candidacy for your master’s degree: complete the Chemistry Master's Advancement to Candidacy Form. Once submitted, Bailey will prepare the Graduate Division DocuSign form for you to complete and sign. Students must advance to candidacy for the master's degree at least one quarter prior to earning

ChaMP Master's Requirements

  • 10 core courses and 3 electives that make up the required coursework for the ChaMP Ph.D. program, with a grade of B or better
  • Students must advance to candidacy for the master's degree at least one quarter prior to earning their degree

Master's Advancement to Candidacy

Advancement to candidacy for the master's degree is independent of advancement for the PhD (a.k.a. "orals"), and must be done the quarter before the degree is expected, at the latest.
