The UCI Department of Chemistry was thrilled to welcome Dr. Donald Gauthier of Merck to campus as the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence in Industrial Leadership Award.

Dr. Gauthier’s visit brought together science, leadership, and career exploration through a day of conversations with our community. He shared his perspective on leading in industry, offered a seminar highlighting landmark scientific achievements, and spoke candidly with 30 nominated UCI Chemistry students during an engaging career Q&A.

For students, the visit provided a rare opportunity to hear directly from an accomplished industry leader about navigating scientific careers, building meaningful collaborations, and turning a passion for chemistry into impact beyond the laboratory. The visit was the first of what we hope will become a lasting tradition of connecting our students and faculty with leaders shaping chemistry and innovation across industry.
