In a recent communication to the Journal of the Americal Chemical Society, Rebeccca Shapiro, Amanda Brindley, and Rachel Martin have shown that doping DMPC/DHPC bicelles with cholesterol sulfate stabilizes the aligned phase at lower temperatures. This allows structural studies of aligned protein samples to be performed at or below room temperature, an obvious advantage for solid-state and solution studies of heat-sensitive proteins.
