This issue of C&EN News features recent work from the Guan lab on stiff-yet-supple thermosets can be reshaped and recycled. Chemically crosslinked thermoset plastics have excellent mechanical strength and solvent resistance, but they cannot be reshaped nor recycled. In a recent communication to J. Am. Chem. Soc. (DOI: 10.1021/jacs.8b03257), Billy Ogden and Zhibin Guan reported a new boroxine-based thermoset plastic that is mechanically strong and can be reshaped multiple times and recycled back to its monomer after usage.
