NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) rely on the application of radiofrequency (rf) irradiation in combination with a static magnetic field. Rf irradiation may lead to heating and other, yet unknown bioeffects. Spin-noise detection does not require any form of rf irradiation, the availability of strong magnetic fields, nor large population differences between the nuclear spin states.
