Global Observations of Oceanic Alkyl Nitrates and Dimethyl Sulfide During the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom)

Abstract:
Oceanic trace gases were measured onboard the NASA DC-8 flying laboratory during the NASA Atmospheric Tomography field campaign with the intent to examine the spatial and temporal fluctuations to the global distribution of these species, as well as establish a dataset of global background levels for future use in the validation of satellites and the constraint of chemical transport models. Airborne in situ measurements of VOCs were obtained via the UC Irvine whole air sampler (WAS) system and analyzed with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Synthetic Approaches to the A74528 and Enterocin Polyketides and Catalytic Asymmetric Radical–Polar Crossover Reactions

Abstract:

My thesis defense will detail the new methods in total synthesis and catalysis that we have developed during my time in the Pronin lab. Specifically, I will focus on the strategies towards cyclopropane activation and alkyl-cobalt(IV) catalysis that we have employed to access novel catalytic asymmetric reaction manifolds and challenging polyketide scaffolds. Our efforts in catalysis have culminated in the development of the first catalytic asymmetric hydrogen-atom-transfer-initiated alkene hydrofunctionalization.

Synthesis and Development of Biologically and Environmentally Stimulated Polymers

Abstract:

This talk will focus on a metabolite responsive nanoparticle-protein complex and developing a polymer membrane for water purification.  The first half will discuss the development of a polymer hydrogel nanoparticle containing a known inhibitor for the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase that is specifically responsive to the cancer metabolite lactate.  The second half delves into the challenges posed by using a polymer of intrinsic microporosity for size exclusion of viruses and other freshwater biological contaminants.
